There seems to be large struggle among men in our day that no one in the public sphere talks about. The statistics say that 50% of us in this room have looked at pornography in some kind of habitual or episodic manner for many years. This is not a stat to be proud about, this is stat revealing how many boys we have among us as opposed to men. Enter Psalm 119:9, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to Your word.”
Do you want to be pure? Do you want to fight against sin? You and I already have an enemy who has chosen to fight against us, and is coming at us strategically to kill our faith in and love for Jesus. John Owen, a Puritan theologian, said “Be killing sin or it will be killing you.” David, the author of Psalm 119, knew this and said two verses later in 119:11, “I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
So you see how a man goes about fighting sin, fighting for purity, against the devil, fighting for God to be made much of in His private and public life? By doing two things: by living our lives in line with the Word and by getting as much of the Word into our hearts as possible. And yes I do want you to hear me saying by this that I mean regular Bible reading and regular Bible memorization must be a normal part of a Christians life. In my own personal life, I get into seasons with these things. One season I’ll be reading through the Bible, and in other seasons I’ll pick apart a single Bible book with a pen and journal. Throughout it all, trying and seeking to memorize passages that stick out to me. Bible memorization I know isn’t easy and it does take time. Some people are quick at it while others take forever. But once you memorize Scripture you have an arsenal of promises and a head and heart full of glorious truths about God, from the Word of God that will aid you in staying closer to God.
May Psalm 111:2 be your life. “Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.”
