New Series: My Biggest Influences

It is now September, isn’t that crazy how quick the time seems to pass by?  I think it is, and as we venture into yet another month I want to do something I’ve never done on the blog.  I’m beginning a new series called “My Biggest Influences.”

I want to do this new series for a lot of reasons.

First, it is helpful to point out who, in my humble opinion, is a good resource for Christians to grab ahold of and learn from.  Second, it is helpful to know who to stay away from.  Third, as a new pastor I want the congregation I lead to know more of how I came to be the way I am now, and who has influenced me greatly. Fourth, honoring the men who’ve labored so vigorously before you, men whom I’ve benefitted so much from is fitting, and God-glorifying.  Don’t miss that last point.  I want to make much of these men for one reason. Yes they are mere men that is all, but they help me know Jesus better.  For that, I am eternally grateful.

So, apart from my largest influence and the greatest Man who ever walked among us, Jesus, apart from His Apostles, and apart from His Word, here is a list of the men I will describe over the next few weeks for you.  I don’t know how long this series will take, and I’m sure this list will grow as I get into it.  But these men are why I am the man I am today.

I’ve separated them into two groups, the living and the dead.

The living: John Piper, R.C. Sproul, John MacArthur, Mark Dever, Ligon Duncan, Albert Mohler, Chris Robins, Kevin DeYoung, David Platt, Matt Chandler, John Fesko, D.A. Carson, Benjamin Joffe, Richard Jones, and Ross Floyd.

The dead: John Owen, Jonathan Edwards, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Augustine, David Brainerd, Jim Elliot, J.R.R. Tolkien, George Whitfield, John Wesley, Charles Spurgeon, and C.S. Lewis.

To be gut level honest with you, I read these men all the time, and I do not read much else unless someone really wants me to check something else out.  I hope you enjoy the following month (there are 30 men on this list!) as I go through these men’s influence on my life.

Perhaps you may find yourself drawn into more of Christ through one of them during this time, that is my prayer.

All of my biographical material is coming from Monergism.com.
